Member Training March 23, 2012

The WI Identity Theft Coalition held its official Members Training on Friday, March 23, 2012. The day-long training was held at the Dept. of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection building and had 40 attendees as well as 8 members who participated in the morning sessions via webinar.

The agenda for the day included an extensive training on identity theft and how to assist victims that was given by Bridgette Harwood and Keith Gethers from the National Identity Theft Victims Assistance Network as well as John Hendrick from the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups (CWAG).

After lunch, we brought together some of Wisconsin’s own experts on the issue of identity theft for a panel discussion on local resources and best practices for assisting victims of identity theft. Panel members included Bill Hodor from the Federal Trade Commission – Midwest Office, Michelle Reinen from the WI Dept. of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection – Office of Privacy Protection, Nicole Zimmer from Legal Action of Wisconsin/SeniorLAW, CJ Doxtater from the Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and Christine Barnekow from Park Bank. Coming Soon – Check out the video to see the excellent insights that were offered by our Wisconsin experts!

Finally, in the last hour of the training, we held an optional Organizational Meeting where we took some time to discuss what our coalition has done so far and what we would like to work on in the coming months. The next big project that we will be undertaking is creating a 7-minute police training video that can be shown during roll call to stress the importance of taking a police report in cases of identity theft. If you are interested in helping to write, produce, or distribute this video, please e-mail Anne at agahmed@cwag.org. The group also decided to hold quarterly meetings in the future to maintain contact with one another, encourage collaboration among members, and provide further training and resources as necessary. Our next coalition meeting will be held in June and the exact date and location will be voted on by our members in the coming weeks. You can see all of the notes from our Organizational Meeting here.

We would like to give a special thank you to the WI Dept. of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection for allowing us to use their facility to hold our training and to WACHA for allowing us to use their WebEx capabilities to broadcast the training via webinar. We would also like to thank the Community Referral Agency, Johnson Bank, Summit Credit Union, WaterStone Bank, and Wisconsin SMP (Senior Medicare Patrol) for their generous contributions that went towards materials and refreshments for the event.
